Is having multiple wives in the Mormon religion illegal

Yes. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Mormon” church) banned the practice of polygamy (having multiple wives) among its members over 120 years ago, in 1890. Anyone found attempting to have multiple wives is immediately excommunicated (kicked out) from the Church.

There are several groups which have broken off from the Mormon Church over this issue. The largest are the FLDS (known for the raid of their ranch in Texas and the legal trials of their leader, Warren Jeffs) and the Apostolic United Brethren (the Brown family of the popular TLC show ‘Sister Wives’ are members of this group). These groups are considered apostate groups by the Mormon Church and are not in any way affiliated with the Mormon Church.
